Suri Alpacas History

The history of Suri alpacas in the USA started with the first importation of 100 white Bolivian Suris in 1991. Prior to that event this breed was unknown in this country. Even to the few camelid fanciers who had recently imported the more commonly known Huacaya alpaca, the Suri was a mysterious breed, little known outside of the Andean altiplano region of South America. Even in Peru and Bolivia it is estimated that only 3-5 percent of all alpacas are of the Suri breed. Suris may even be outnumbered by their wild cousins the Vicuna, a protected wildlife species and the ancestor to the domestic alpaca. http://ow.ly/i/QcNY

Our Exciting Result at the recent Colourbration show

Hi Mum!!

Hi Mum!!

Nova Supreme Brown Colourbration 2013

Nova Supreme Brown Colourbration 2013

Due to our very Quiet Breeding program this previous 12 months we had no Juniors to exhibit so .. As I do believe that a Serious Breeder should Show the Public their current Stock,

The question Was... Who do we Take to the Premier Colour Show here in WA.. ???

Looking out in my Paddock my Eye is drawn to Nova'

She is a beautiful Huacaya Female and has 3 live cria and unfortunately a Set of Twins that did not survive, so as she is now empty .. Why Not..

 And what a Fabulous Result...

Supreme Champion Brown.. and in front of her beautiful Son, Katydid Bossanova the Supreme last year...

Let me know if you Like!! I do..

Something Different to Have in our Introduction to our Website...

We have needed to find a new Image for our Stud ...

and as we do have some very Glamorous and Appealing Alpacas thought if we could find a photographer that could capture the "look" of some of our animals it certainly might Help..

I think Diana has done just that!!!

We are intending to slowly add to our Site, more of her photos , so keep watching...

Katydid Alpaca Stud is found in the Picturesque Foothills ,only 55 K's East of Perth , Western Australia

We are breeders of both types of Alpaca, Suri and Huacaya, although we have specialised in the Rare and Unusual   "Suri" Coloured and White

At Katydid our breeding program produces a range of quality alpacas in different colours and is producing award-winning animals with excellent conformation and outstanding fleece.

Alpacas are a domesticated member of the camelid family, and along with Llamas, Guanacos and Vicunas, are native to South America. The main characteristic of the Alpaca is the fleece, which is commonly called "Fibre of the Gods.

Alpacas can be separated into two types "Suri" and "Huacaya".

The main difference between the Suri and the Huacaya is the Fleece type. The Huacaya exhibits a fluffy and dense fleece that stands away from the body.

The Suri has a completely different style that falls down from the body in dreadlocks, Sometimes referred to as "Curtains of Silk"and leaving the backbone partly exposed.

The Suri fleece is extremely lustrous with a beautiful silky handle

Katydid Treasure's Indiana... Whiteman Show WA  April 2012

Not long after I became addicted to "Alpaca"  I discovered the virtues of the Beautiful Silken Suri , and decided to Specialise in the Suri type.

At the time there were very few Suris in WA, if any, so I looked for a way to access a number of Females.  as a reult I leased a very good male and that was our beginning… of the Katydid Suri Addition…

Our Huacayas were coming on nicely and we have continued to breed selectively using only the proven lines to keep up our Quality

Our herd is of  significant quality as our results demonstrate, and we are continuously striving to improve by introducing more Accoyo genetics

Recently have intoduced Superior Bloodlines thru Top Quality boys bred from well known Sires ,  Suris: T'pito, Bosisto, and El Cordoba,  the progeny from these males are starting to come thru now... and Huacayas: Iceman and Challenger

As a result we are now  able to offer selected Alpacas , Suri and Huacaya, and if you are looking for information about the Animals or Industry please feel free to call as we love talking “Alpaca” and welcome farm visits,  just a call to let us know …

Our Aim is to breed Alpacas that are true to type with sound conformation as this gives the animal health and strength, together with the ability to grow fleece of  Fineness, Density and Handle , from both types,
